Using Personality Dimensions®
Personality Dimensions® builds on the foundations for understanding temperament or personality preferences established by the work of David Keirsey, Linda Berens and Don Lowry, and a history of temperament theories that span 25 centuries. It is an inspiring tool to use with intact teams and diverse groups on a wide array of topics. Personality Dimensions ® is always one of our most requested workshops. Participants appreciate the "aha" moments that occur as they learn about themselves and their colleagues, while having fun with lots of laughter and interactive activities!
A basic Personality Dimensions® workshop facilitates self-awareness and learning about others. However, this tool also lends itself to customized applications. As co-authors of the popular themed Personality Dimensions® Toolkits for Trainers series, Deirdre and Roberta are uniquely equipped to customize a workshop to exactly meet your needs. Topics include:
-
Work-Life Balance
- Personality Dimensions® can help to identify the unique ways individuals perceive balance, prioritize according to individual style, and recognize how others act and react when they are struggling to find balance.
-
Teambuilding
- Each team member will have individual needs, strengths and communication styles. When not understood, these differences can cause conflict. Personality Dimensions® will help team members recognize and appreciate their individual differences and minimize unproductive conflict.
-
Leadership Development
- Effective leaders don't leave their personalities at home. However, they can learn to communicate in ways that can be heard by diverse members of their team. Discover the strengths and challenges of diverse leadership styles as well as the wide range of expectations and preferences held by leaders and employees in your organization.
-
Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service
- Imagine the effectiveness of your sales force if they could accurately identify the needs and preferences of customers and clients. Learn to recognize the diversity of clients and customers and how to stretch your style to "speak" their language.
-
Career Management
- This workshop will help participants focus on their unique strengths, values, and preferences to assist them in identifying where they may find a "best fit" in today's rapidly changing workplace.
-
Learning Styles and Strategies
- Lifelong learning has become increasingly important but many adults in the workplace don't understand that each of us learns in a different way. This workshop can have two purposes: 1) to assist learners with identifying individual learning preferences and thriving in less than ideal environments, and 2) to help educators and course designers structure learning that is a "fit" for all.
Life Strategies also provides training for Personality Dimensions® Facilitators.

Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
The most widely used personality/self-awareness assessment in the world, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®), is relevant for career/life management, leadership development, relationship strengthening, teambuilding, and enhancing communication. The MBTI® is an often requested tool in our corporate training.
The basic MBTI® provides a profile of individual personal preferences on four bipolar scales, as follows:
- Introversion/Extraversion - how individuals show and use their energy
- Sensing/Intuition - how individuals perceive things
- Thinking/Feeling - how individuals judge things
- Judging/Perceiving - how individuals "do life"
Once individuals have completed the assessment and learned a bit about the model, they are assigned a code to represent their personality type (e.g., ISTJ or ENFP).
Leadership Development with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
The Life Strategies team has customized MBTI® workshops for a number of management and executive programs. For a basic understanding of personality "type" and its impact on leadership styles and strategies, we often use the basic MBTI® assessment (Form M) and the booklet, Intro to Type in Organizations.
For a more sophisticated assessment and report, we use the MBTI® "Step II" assessment (Form Q), which provides a detailed profile of the sub-factors that make up each of the four bipolar scales. For example, did you know that not all extraverts are gregarious "schmoozers"?
Through exploring the details of MBTI® types, we can also help managers understand why individuals who seem to have very similar personal styles can have incredible difficulty working together. For example, in one of our workshops, two managers with the same basic MBTI® code discovered that their "disconnect" was due to one of them being "pressure-prompted" while the other had a strong preference for being an "early starter." You can imagine the conflict around project deadlines!

How to Decide Between Personality Dimensions® and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to use the MBTI® or Personality Dimensions® with your team. The following steps may help you decide which type of workshop would be most suitable.
What is your purpose or goal?
An important first step will be getting focused on the reason(s) for conducting one of these workshops. Some common themes include:
- Team building
- Strengthening communication
- Conflict management/resolution
- Leadership development
- Work-life balance
- Stress management
- Sales, marketing, and/or customer service
Which tool do you prefer? Personality Dimensions® and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® can be used for similar purposes. Considerations include:
-
Personality Dimensions®
- Most effective with groups of 15 or more participants (Not recommended for groups with less than 10-12 participants)
- Very interactive, "colourful", and high energy
- Low cost for participant packages (approximately $6.00 per person)
-
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
- Stronger psychometric base; more extensive assessment
- With online versions, more comprehensive narrative reports
- Supplementary resources available (i.e., booklets, articles, books)
- Higher per participant cost
- Form M Interpretive Report?$25-$35 per person
- Form Q, Step II Interpretive?$40-$60 per person

Using Assessments of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence has many different definitions:
Dr. Reuven BarOn, author of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory® defines it as...
"an array of non-cognitive capabilities, and skills that influence one?s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures."
Daniel Goleman, author of the popular books on emotional intelligence, defines it as...
"abilities such as being able to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustrations; to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one's moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think; to empathize and to hope." (Goleman,1997)
Perhaps emotional intelligence could simply be thought of as "street smarts", those traits, characteristics, and behaviours not included in our IQ. Emotional intelligence impacts how we handle our relationships, control our emotions, deal with conflict and difficult situations, react to change, and overcome challenges. Many believe it is more important to career and life success than IQ.
Life Strategies can introduce the concept of emotional intelligence to your organization through the use of two different assessment tools:
BarOn Emotional Quotient-Inventory (EQ-i®)
This tool provides respondents with a profile of scores across the 15 components of EQ, as defined by Reuvan BarOn. General EQ categories include intra- and inter-personal competencies, stress management, adaptability, and general mood. A variety of reports are available, tailored to the needs of both employees and leaders.
Multidimensional Emotional Intelligence Assessment - Workplace
The Multidimensional Emotional Intelligence Assessment -Workplace (MEIA-W)® results in categories that include both recognition and regulation of emotion in self and others, non-verbal emotional expression, empathy, intuition, creative thinking, mood redirected attention, and motivating emotions. It is based on a model of Emotional Intelligence developed by Salovey and Mayer.
Regardless of the tool employed, our interactive and experiential workshops provide in-depth explanations of the meaning of each score, highlight individual strengths and weaknesses, and offer tips and strategies for personal and professional development activities to improve emotional intelligence.

Using the Let's CHAT! Model
Many workers today share four common concerns:
- Our organization doesn't communicate with us...they never tell us anything!
- I've got a life outside of work to deal with...nobody cares about that!
- I'm not appreciated for the work that I do...nobody notices!
- Sure they say that things will get better...nothing happens!
Organizations, on the other hand, share common concerns as well:
- We've asked our employees for suggestions and solutions...nobody's given any!
- We've got a business to run...employees aren't as committed as they used to be!
- We've tried to make this a good place to work...nobody appreciates that!
- We need to make some changes to stay competitive...why don't they see that?
As organizations face the challenge of recruiting, retaining, and reskilling the employees that they need in the changing workplace, and employees strive to find a measure of work-life balance as they continue to learn and grow, managers and supervisors are often expected to take on the role of coach, mentor, or confidant.
Let's CHAT! is an innovative program that facilitates open communication, empathy, appreciation, and a commitment to action between employees and their supervisors or managers (or between managers and the executive team). It offers structure, efficiency, and focus to meetings that could otherwise be frustrating, shallow, or unproductive.
The Let's CHAT! model has been used successfully with medical professional teams, church leaders, helping professionals, and business managers. The Let's CHAT! program will equip your team to:
- Communicate effectively through productive and respectful meetings and conversations
- Achieve buy-in to key projects and solicit enthusiastic offers of help from team players
- Create a positive atmosphere where all team members know they are appreciated
- Develop collaborative action plans and take action to ensure that plans are implemented
There are two options for introducing Let's CHAT!:
- Certify staff to use the model in-house, certified staff can train and support managers in the use of Let's CHAT! with their employees
- A Life Strategies team member will introduce the model to a group of managers and provide training for them to use it with staff. Only managers attending the workshop could use the model with their teams

Nurture the Leader Within
Leadership begins with an inner potential that is carefully nurtured. Over time, with the right ingredients and a healthy environment, leaders grow and begin to achieve their full potential. Inspirational leaders ensure that the cycle continues…as they provide a work environment in which the next generation can thrive. It all starts by nurturing the leader within.
Let's Get Practical!
As career management professionals, you focus your days on helping clients solve career/life problems. In her keynote, Let's Get Practical!, Dr. Roberta Neault will inspire you to sort through conflicting demands in your busy lives to focus on a realistic approach to your own career development and work-life balance. Through humour, stories and case examples, Roberta will share tips and strategies for meeting the needs of diverse clients, staying current in this constantly evolving field, taking care of yourself and enabling you to maintain the energy and enthusiasm you need to keep doing the important work that you do.
The Power of Connectedness: Reaching Farther…Together
In a global economy, how do we define our community? As local organizations, what specific regions do we serve? Through Internet marketing, web-based learning, and international partnerships, the world seems to have become a much smaller place. Not only can we attract international students to attend programs in Canada, we can work online, from Vancouver, to instruct students in their homes or offices in Shanghai, New York and Paris. We can provide consulting services from a lakeside cabin in Northern Canada to a thriving business based in Buenos Aires. Call centres in New Brunswick provide services to corporations in California. Through strategic partnerships and creative use of technology, we can reach right around the world...together.
